Östgötatrafiken, Sweden
A growing need for reliable passenger information
For public transport authorities, delivering accurate and timely information to passengers is critical. Östgötatrafiken, operating 350 vehicles across the county of Östergötland in Sweden, faced increasing challenges with outdated onboard passenger information systems. An internal study showed that only 36% of signage and announcements functioned correctly, far below the level required to meet passenger expectations.
Moving to a cloud-based, future-proof platform
To solve this, Östgötatrafiken needed a modern software solution that could centralize all passenger information, monitor system health in real-time, and leverage IoT technologies for full transparency of the fleet. The authority chose Axentia Transit Intelligence, a cloud-based platform that connects systems, vehicles, and users into a unified platform. It enabled real-time management of operations and passenger information, with full control and visibility into every vehicle.
The cloud architecture allows Östgötatrafiken to easily maintain, update, and scale the system without being tied to specific hardware. Off-the-shelf components can be used and replaced as technology evolves, ensuring long-term flexibility and cost efficiency.
Full control from day one
After extensive testing, Östgötatrafiken rolled out Transit Intelligence on 150 new buses in June 2020. From the first day of operation, the authority gained a complete overview of all real-time passenger information events, enabling both quick troubleshooting and continuous service optimization. This new visibility into real-time vehicle data has helped staff better understand and improve the flow of traffic and communication.
“With this complex data gathered and provided to me, I can finally understand what’s going on in the vehicles and the traffic. It improves the quality of our services to the customers.”

Successful implementation across Östgötatrafiken’s fleet
After the successful launch, Transit Intelligence was gradually implemented across Östgötatrafiken’s entire fleet. With real-time monitoring and centralized control, they can continuously monitor operations, detect issues early, and prevent disruptions. This has increased public transport reliability and ensured that passengers consistently receive accurate real-time information onboard, resulting in better passenger experience across the region.
